Preparing for Spring 2019 semester
As the semester begins in just a few days, it's easy to begin thinking about future assignments, exams, and responsibilities. This is natural and healthy, but it can sometimes go too far.
Personally, I like to stress about these things and focus on them, rather than simply taking care of the here and now. This semester, I'm deciding to let go and enjoy where I am, taking care of things as they arise! I'm a very proactive person, so I'm constantly biting off more than I can chew. (Definitely the person who works on Week 12 content on Week 4.) I'm sharing my tips and tricks on having a successful semester, while balancing the stress and having a little fun!
The #1 thing to do to ensure the best semester:
PRAY. Don't just pray when it's five seconds before a huge exam you haven't studied for, pray for blessings over the semester and strength to get through each hurdle. I'm beginning my semester surrendering it completely to God.
This doesn't just apply to college, this applies to literally EVERY aspect of your life! Meetings, business plans, relationships... God cares for the big and the little things in your life. He wants the best for you and loves us all endlessly. (Jeremiah 29:11)
In addition to praying, I also have a few things I do and buy to keep me on track throughout the semester.
The number one thing I keep with me at all times is my agenda! Having a good planner is the key to life. I actually have six that I use on a daily basis (some for school, some for business, some for personal, some for events) and I honestly have no idea what I'd do without mine. There are lots of awesome ones to use, but the one I've had since high school and continue to use is my Lilly Pulitzer agenda. It has the perfect amount of space, lots of lines and room to not only write down your daily plans and responsibilities, but also dreams, weekend plans, and goals. This year, I'm debating on getting another LP one or the Purposeful Planner, which I just discovered recently. Follow along with me on Instagram @madelinekeeling to see which one I choose!
A principle I also have is buying random things I want throughout the semester to keep me from getting in a rut or overspending once I have a chance to shop. That Target trip you've been craving? Go for it, girl. Get Starbs every day one week? You should! I've found that the more I give into my urges to shop, I spend less and am happier. Personally, when I look down at a colorful, shiny pen in class or at the office, it makes my task a little less difficult and a lot more fun. Treat yo' self is a real thing, y'all.
Other ways I maintain balance to have a successful semester is by spending quality time with my friends and family. As a small business owner, it's easy to spend every free moment in my office. Literally. There have been past times I've done that, but I leave the most important people in my life feeling deprived and rejected. So, I now I try to maintain balance in the best way: by always putting my people first and foremost. (I talked about it here, so go check it out!) I never miss a family dinner or event and always try to schedule myself so I can make plans with friends. When I feel like my people are happy, I feel less pressure to keep everyone happy and can be more efficient in my every day responsibilities.
The most important and overall theme throughout the semester should be taking care of yourself. I do this by regularly doing yoga and trying new classes. This semester, I'm hoping to take a spin, pilates, and Zumba class! Be sure to keep your health, whether physical, mental, or spiritual, as your focus.
Lastly, my key to staying happy throughout the semester is traveling. Whether you take a drive down to your local lake or fly to an island, you're sure to come back feeling refreshed and renewed. This can seem impossible, but y'all, spring break is coming soon and you should take a break! It's important to do what makes you happy and be well-traveled. Grab a group of your fave girlies and hit the road! It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to do something fun.
College is a blast and should be enjoyed to the fullest! Don't let your responsibilities weigh you down and make you feel overwhelmed. These tips will keep you feeling fulfilled and excited for the semester. Want to see more content like this? Be sure to drop a comment below.
